Why I Drink MUD/WTR Instead of Coffee

Coffee and I had a good run. Then caffeine stopped agreeing with me, and eventually I found something else.

Did you know about two-thirds of American adults drink coffee every day? That’s a lot of coffee. I am no longer one of those people. I can’t be. We’ll get to that in a minute.

For most of my life, I wasn’t a coffee drinker at all. When other kids started drinking it in high school, I said I wouldn’t because coffee stunted your growth. Well, that’s not true. The stunting-your-growth part, anyway. But I still didn’t drink it. I was a tea guy. English tea, green tea, matcha… all different kinds.

Then, around 2013, I got into coffee. I’ve always loved the smell of it, and there’s something incredibly comforting about a cup of coffee. At the time, I was living back home with my mom and started drinking so much that the poor Keurig wasn’t cutting it anymore. She eventually got a regular coffee pot, and I’d sometimes go through almost two pots in a day.

A few years later, something changed. I was living in El Paso and started noticing that the amount of caffeine in coffee, or even a regular cola, didn’t sit right with me anymore. I still remember sitting at a station event drinking an RC Cola. Yup, that’s what we had to give away. Suddenly, I felt like a panic attack was coming on.

I’m quite familiar with panic attacks. I’ve been hospitalized twice because of them. They’re terrifying, and once you’ve experienced one, you recognize that feeling when it starts creeping in. I tried soda a couple more times after that and had the same reaction. Eventually, I accepted that caffeine in those amounts just wasn’t in my future anymore.

Small amounts of caffeine don’t bother me the same way, so I went back to tea.

Then, about three years ago, I started seeing ads for MUD/WTR popping up in my feeds. I was already on a bit of a mushroom kick, but I never actually ordered it.

That changed when I was visiting my dad at his beach house in Salishan, Oregon. We stopped at a local coffee shop and there it was: MUD/WTR. They sold it by the cup, so I figured this was my chance to finally try it.

The person working there actually gave me a heads-up before I ordered. MUD/WTR is definitely different, and since I’d never had it before, they wanted me to taste it first and make sure I actually liked it.

I did. A lot.

I started figuring out where I could buy MUD/WTR around Portland, picked some up, brought it home to El Paso, and I’ve been buying it ever since. These days, I regularly order it directly from MUD/WTR.

So What Exactly Is MUD/WTR?

MUD/WTR isn’t coffee, and I wouldn’t go into it expecting it to taste exactly like coffee. That’s probably important to establish right away.

Its Original blend combines cacao and spices with mushrooms including lion’s mane, chaga, reishi, and cordyceps. It also contains a relatively small amount of caffeine compared with a typical cup of coffee.

MUD/WTR markets its mushroom blend around things like energy, focus, and general wellness. I’m always cautious about turning claims like those into promises. I’m not going to tell you that drinking mushrooms is going to magically transform your health.

That’s not why I’m recommending it.

I’m recommending it because I actually drink the stuff. For someone like me who enjoys having a warm drink and likes the ritual that comes with coffee or tea, but doesn’t want a large dose of caffeine, MUD/WTR fits incredibly well. And I genuinely like it.

Why I Recommend MUD/WTR

I actually drink it. I’ve been buying it for years, I genuinely enjoy it, and it gives me the warm-drink ritual I like without the amount of caffeine I’d get from coffee.

Should You Try It?

If you’re looking to cut back on coffee, reduce your caffeine intake, or you’re simply curious about mushroom-based drinks, I think MUD/WTR is absolutely worth trying. Just don’t go into your first cup expecting coffee. It’s its own thing.

The mushroom drink I’ve been buying for years as my lower-caffeine alternative to coffee.

I may earn a commission if you purchase through this Amazon link.

But here’s where I become a terrible salesman. At least if the goal is getting you to buy things through my affiliate links so I can make money.

If you try MUD/WTR, really like it, and decide you want to keep buying it, especially if you’re willing to subscribe, go check out MUD/WTR’s website too. Seriously. They regularly run deals on their products, and depending on what you’re buying, ordering directly from them may make more sense.

Buying It Regularly?

Check MUD/WTR directly too. They regularly offer deals and subscription options, and depending on what you’re buying, going direct may make more sense.

Yes, that means you might not use my Amazon affiliate link. I’ll survive. I’d rather tell you what I’d actually do.

That’s the Point of the Trading Post

And really, that’s the entire idea behind the Trading Post here at Goatland. I’m not interested in filling this place with random products because somebody will give me a commission if you buy them. The things you find here are things I actually use and can recommend.

Sometimes that’ll be something inexpensive I use around the house. Sometimes it’ll be equipment I’ve owned for years. Sometimes it’ll be something weird like a mushroom drink I first tried at a coffee shop on the Oregon coast.

If I put something here, I want the recommendation to mean something.

MUD/WTR gets that recommendation. I’ve been buying it for years. I genuinely enjoy it.

And coffee and I aren’t getting back together anytime soon.
