The biggest thing I’m struggling with right now is getting back into a routine when life doesn’t seem to want me to be in one. But maybe that’s the test. Creating a routine in the middle of chaos.
Last week, and even into this week, has been anything but normal. We’ve spent hours dealing with someone trying to steal my wife’s identity, storm damage, and now our dog, who just had back surgery, suddenly started limping. It’s been a lot. Thankfully, when it comes to sweet Lucy, she must have just tweaked something because she was only limping for that one evening.
Man, the biggest issue with her is that she can’t stop herself. She gets so worked up when people are walking anywhere near our house, which happens to be on a corner, that she sprints across the backyard to the fence. Well, she’s not quite healthy enough to be doing that yet. One thing I’ve been learning that seems to help is not yelling when your dog is barking their ass off or running frantically around the yard because someone happens to be passing by. They may take that as a cue that something is wrong and continue freaking out. Instead, calmly call them over or go to them and pet them. Let them know there’s nothing to worry about through your actions rather than raising your voice.
Anyway, as far as all the training goes, it’s still slow and steady. You’ll notice my weight is hovering around 193 pounds, almost plateauing there. I think the chaos has a lot to do with that. I’ve been working on eating right and getting to the gym, but everything going on has made that more difficult. Again, though, this is the goal. It’s easy to have a routine when everything is going according to plan.
Mike Tyson said it best: “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”
Now, by no means am I saying life is punching me in the mouth. It’s been rocky, yeah, but nothing too terrible. I wouldn’t want to minimize people who are actually going through some serious stuff by overinflating what I’ve been dealing with.
And there are plenty of positives. My Costco run last week yielded a lot of solid proteins, and today I’m making mahi!
So we just have to keep at this. Move forward and adapt.
